Art for advertising

The other day it struck me to research those Dunkin’ Donuts “America Runs on Dunkin” ads, and it turns out, it’s the weirdrock band They Might Be Giants who contributed 14 original songs for such a purpose.

Amazing, no?

They’re infectious. And weird. And this is coming from a band who also recently recorded a children’s album. (Check out the song “Bed, Bed, Bed” – my 1 1/2 year old son loves it.)

Something else amusing is the ultra-conservative FOX News uses bits of sound in their commercials from none other than Trent Reznor (of Nine Inch Nails). Crazy!

And then there’s the iPod ads, any and all ads that use some sort of song in their commercial (Devo themselves re-recorded their hit “Whip It” with “Swiffer” in the place of the vocal hook.. weird.)
